Verification Numbers for Email Services

By Inbox Number Team · Published · Last updated · 2 min read

Verification numbers for email services are phone numbers used to receive the code an email provider sends at sign-up, login or recovery. Because email unlocks your other accounts, use a monthly number you keep or your own mobile number for recovery, and add passkeys. Providers decide which numbers they accept.

This page covers email services such as Google and Microsoft, both listed in the Inbox Number OTP marketplace. Part of our services overview. Inbox Number is not affiliated with these providers.

Why is email different?

Your email account is usually the recovery route for everything else, so losing access is serious. That makes number choice more important here than for most services.

Which number type fits an email account?

For a main email account, your own mobile number or a monthly number you'll keep. A one-time number only suits a secondary, disposable inbox.

Number typeFit for email
Your own mobile numberBest for your primary email recovery
Monthly numberGood for secondary or project inboxes you'll keep
One-time activationOnly for a disposable inbox that won't need recovery

How should you secure an email account?

Turn on passkeys or an authenticator app, keep recovery details current, and never share codes. See our OTP verification guide.

What if no code arrives?

Wait a minute, check the format and resend once. For one-time orders, cancel for a balance refund. See OTP not received.

What restrictions apply?

Email providers may decline some numbers, limit how many accounts use one number, and ask for re-verification. Compatibility has not yet been tested by Inbox Number.
