Why Is My SMS Verification Code Not Arriving? (OTP Not Received)

By Inbox Number Team · Published · Last updated · 4 min read

OTP not received? The most common causes are a mistyped number or country code, a short network delay, a resend or rate limit on the service's side, or the service declining that number type. Wait a minute, check the number format, resend once, and if nothing arrives, try a different number type.

Few things are more frustrating than staring at a "We sent you a code" screen while nothing happens. Most missing codes have simple causes. Work through this checklist in order. It's part of our OTP verification guide.

Why do SMS verification codes fail to arrive?

Codes fail because of input mistakes, delivery delays, limits set by the sending service, or because the service won't send to that number type. Only the first three are usually fixable on your side.

What should you check first?

Check the number and country code, then wait a full minute before doing anything else. These two steps solve a large share of problems.

  1. Confirm the number. Compare every digit with the number shown in your dashboard.
  2. Check the country code. Choose the right country in the form, and don't add an extra leading 0 or a duplicate code.
  3. Wait 60 seconds. Codes are often delayed by a few seconds to a minute.
  4. Refresh your inbox. Make sure you're looking at the right number in the dashboard.

What if the code still hasn't arrived?

Request a new code once, then stop. Repeated requests can trigger the service's rate limits, which may block sends to that number for a while.

  1. Resend once, after the service's timer allows.
  2. Try the voice-call option only if the service offers it and your number can receive calls; Inbox Number numbers are designed for SMS.
  3. Check the service's status page in case its messaging system is having issues.

Could the service be blocking the number type?

Yes. Some services check whether a number is mobile, landline or VoIP, and decline types they don't accept. When that happens, the code is never sent, however long you wait.

Signs include an error message such as "this number can't be used", or a code that never arrives on repeated attempts while other services work fine. Read why some websites reject virtual phone numbers for the reasons behind this.

What other causes are there?

Other causes include sender-side outages, codes sent by email or in-app instead of SMS, and accounts flagged for too many attempts.

  1. Look elsewhere. Some services send the code by email or to an app you're already logged into.
  2. Too many attempts. If you've tried many times, wait an hour before trying again.
  3. Account checks. Some services require extra verification for new accounts.

What can you do on Inbox Number?

On a one-time order, if no code arrives within the order window, cancel it and the price goes back to your balance. For repeat codes, a short-term US rental or a monthly number may be a better fit.

How can you avoid the problem next time?

Choose the number type that matches the account's lifetime, check a service's phone requirements before signing up, and keep important accounts on numbers you control long-term.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait for an OTP?

Wait at least a minute. If nothing arrives after one resend and a few more minutes, the service may not be sending to that number.

Why do I get the code on my phone but not on a virtual number?

The service may treat virtual numbers differently or decline them. That's the service's decision.

Can resending too often cause problems?

Yes. Many services rate-limit codes, and repeated requests can block sends for a while.

Will I be charged if no code arrives on a one-time number?

On Inbox Number, you can cancel and the price returns to your balance.

Is the code still valid if it arrives late?

Often not. Codes usually expire within minutes; request a fresh one.

Should I contact Inbox Number support?

Yes, if no services deliver to your number at all, or if a refund didn't appear. Visit the Help Center.

Still stuck?

Try a different number type or country, and check the service's rules. Get a one-time number or keep a monthly number for accounts you'll use again.
